The original Mass Effect lacked fluidity in battle – since the combat system relies on the duck-and-cover style of gameplay, this was important and it was honestly hard to get used to once I finished the trilogy and circled round again. Mass Effect 2 presents a huge improvement to this system. I’m the first to support the Mass Effect series, but I’m also the first to criticize how little I actually liked the combat in the first game. The paragon/renegade system also makes a notable return and is even better than before, letting you become a true hero or a true badass as you please. I constantly felt like I was deeply involved with each recruit on the Normandy and came to like each one of them for different reasons – it’s the perfect way to portray complex characters. The story is fast paced and has few lulls, constantly pushing you to act without rushing your decisions. Returning from the first game are Garrus, Tali, and technically Wrex and Liara, though they won’t be on your squad, while a bunch of new characters, like Jacob, Miranda, Mordin, Jack, and many more come to help in the fight for the galaxy.

The lore, worldbuilding, and storytelling in this title is second to none – each of the Shepard’s crewmates, whom you gradually recruit throughout the game, become fully fleshed out characters through bits of dialogue and Loyalty missions that happen as the situation grows dire. This event sets up the plot where Shepard (shockingly not actually dead) must investigate why attacks like this are happening across the Milky Way while a pending Reaper Invasion is on its way through the dark reaches of space.
